Outer Space Treaty

While reading the newspaper today, it was mentioned that on this day back in 1967 the Outer Space Treaty was agreed upon and entered into force. This agreement prohibited placing weapons of mass destruction on the moon or elsewhere in space. Space exploration was recognized as a peaceful endeavor and a benefit to all mankind , among other things.

That was almost 50 years ago . . . I can’t help but wonder what will happen in the next 50 years. Will Russia, India, China, and North Korea honor this treaty as they excel in their space exploration?

Just something I was thinking about . . .

  2. That’s an interesting question Sadie. Unfortunately treaties and contracts depend solely on the faith that the signatories will observe the terms.- unless there is an enforcement body. And in the case of nations, there is no enforcement body. I don’t think you have to worry about North Korea or Russia – both are struggling to even feed their populations. N.K. does does produce enough value in their society to be able to afford a space based weapon. They practically bankrupted their country developing nuclear weapons. And they do not even have a lift vehicle powerful enough to reach the US with those weapons. There is no way they could mount a space endeavor, let alone design and build a space weapon (targetting is a major, major issue with such a weapon). Russia may have the capability but is having serious internal issues with an economy that is limping along barely sustained. I am comfortable they can be ruled out.

    Now China is a problem. I have no doubt that they can build and depoly such a weapon. Getting them to sign anything is pretty useless. The only question then becomes, what would they gain? And at what cost? Of all the nations in the world, that is the only one that would concern me.Right now China is busy investing in resources the world over – flexing their new found financial muscles for their ultimate benefit. Why bother taking anything by force when you can just buy it? I think they have come to the realization (along with many other countries) that the way to gain power in this modern world is to control the money and ownership – not by force. And I think that China may just succeed although I wouldn’t think that violence would be a part of the plan as that destroys assets and workforce. They have come to love our godless money too much and see it as the future of their country.

  3. What actually amazes me is that they could actually, any of those nations would be able to put weapons of mass destruction all the way into the moon. If they do, I actually would prefer the U.S to have them there than any of those other nut case countries.

  4. Given the failures of the space programs by the Russians, Chinese and North Koreans, I suspect they’ll find the same thing we did: governments can afford a space program. The privatization and commercialization of space is under way, and we’ll just have to see how that all shakes out.

    One thing that’s nice: orbital platforms are kind of sitting ducks and very vulnerable to attack, so an arms race in space is hugely expensive and fragile to boot.

    1. Laughing!! It is after 2:00 a.m. & I am going to bed – I was really behind on responding to my comments. I see them when they come in on my phone – love that! – but the damn thing is so hard to type on, that I prefer to do all my responding from the laptop. Every time I have gotten on here lately, I get into reading everyone else’s blogs, & so really needed to work on my own 🙂 Besides having 2 posts in draft form, I very much enjoy the comments I get, & like to try & respond to them all if I can.

I really didn’t date much & I am sure the ones I did date were all “criminals” in some form or fashion LOL (though not too bad, I hope), but my best friend in high school – now she has always liked the “bad boys that ride Harleys” and has been dragging them up for over 40 years . . . in high school, she dated this one guy for awhile, and next thing I know she’s got us hanging out at some Bandidos house. I could tell some stories of my adventures with her!! (Probably stories I will NEVER tell in this forum, nor will my child ever hear them 🙂 Memories are always good though!)

Having seen the picture of you as a youngster….you are a hottie! “Baddy” boys where probably coming out of the wood work to talk to you…or more 😉 Hey I want to know the crazy things with the Bandidos, those guys is no joke. Plus I´m sure your “child”which seems to me it´s already grown up, can handle it. Not every single detail but in general yes so spill out your secrets!

        1. 🙂 My secrets . . . if they are ever written about – it will be under a fake name (like now LOL!!!) and under the guise of fiction. Let’s just say that I am happy to have the memories & happy to have survived my childhood 😉 It was a bit wild, to say the least, & I can tell you that I watched my kid like a hawk growing up.
